CLS expertise in Asia increasing: Pavel Karpunin, Partner of the firm, appointed arbitrator of Harbin Arbitration Commission

Pavel Karpunin, a Partner at the CLS law firm, is included in the 6th Panel of Arbitrators of the Harbin Arbitration Commission (HRBAC), also known as the Northeast Asia International Arbitration Center. Dispute resolution with Chinese contracting parties is now becoming even more direct and predictable for CLS clients.

The Harbin Arbitration Commission is the only arbitration institution for civil and commercial matters in the Harbin region, which today examines disputes both within China and with the participation of foreign parties: contractual, purchase and sale, supply, construction, contract, loan and others. The Commission has more than 400 arbitrators, over 100 of whom represent the United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, Malaysia and other countries. Each specializes in certain branches of law and economics, which guarantees deep expertise in dealing with complex international cases.

Pavel Karpunin, CLS Partner, commented on the appointment:

“The opportunity to settle disputes through Chinese arbitration is of strategic importance in today's reality. CLS has been purposefully developing the Chinese business for many years, cooperating with major law firms in China. The number of projects is growing on both sides: both Russian companies planning to enter China and Chinese businesses operating in Russia. Personal appointment as an arbitrator expands the range of opportunities that we can offer to clients whose activities involve China. I am grateful to HRBAC for their trust and appreciation of our qualifications.”

A CLS Partner being among the HRBAC arbitrators is an additional guarantee that the firm's clients will receive not only legal support, but also practical knowledge of the procedures and established practice of case review in one of the key arbitration institutions in the region. An arbitrator acts independently and impartially, but this knowledge allows the CLS team to more accurately build a strategy to protect interests of the client at all stages of a dispute.

The CLS team provides support for arbitration disputes at all stages: from the inclusion of the correct wording of the arbitration clause in a contract to the actual enforcement of the decision, including in China and Russia. China is a party to the New York Convention, so HRBAC decisions are recognized and enforced in over 170 countries.
